The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a local phone scam targeting grandparents. The scam starts with a phone call to the victim. The caller will disguise their voice and identify themselves as the victim’s grandchild. The caller will claim to have been arrested and in need of bail money, saying that they can’t talk for long. The caller then provides a call-back number that, when dialed, connects to a scammer claiming to represent local law enforcement. A tech consultant used a Hackensack company's money to buy $200,000 worth of cellphones that he then sold on eBay, authorities charged. Michael Acosta, 34, of North Bergen used his position in the company to buy more than 400 phones without authorization from its service provider between October 2015 and September 2018, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo said Friday.
