K9-Loving Military Family Fights For Return Of Bomb-Sniffing ‘Mattie Cakes’
“The emptiness in our home is palpable,” the wife of a Central Jersey Army National Guardsman who had his bomb-sniffing dog taken back by his employer said Friday. “We all miss her,” Deirdre Igoe-Fennessy said. Her husband, Seamus, had been handling and training Mattie the past five years. After the 20-year Guardsman was summoned for long-term active duty in nearby New York, MSA Security took her back. It began as a local story but has begun picking up steam via an online petition and Facebook page. The nearly 7-year-old black Lab has only known the Middlesex County (Old Bridge) coup…

Westport Dad Launches Petition Against 'Monster' Middle School
A Westport father is rallying the community as he attempts to prevent the school district from creating what he dubbed a “monster school.” Earlier this year, the Coleytown Middle School in Westport was forced to shut down for the year due to an ongoing mold problem. The emergency closure left the 450 Coleytown elementary school students and staff split between Bedford Middle School and Staples High School. One of the proposals included the consolidation of every middle school in the district into one school in Bedford, drawing the ire of some opposed to the “monster school.” The district’s …

Senate OKs Bill To Add 'TZB' To Official Bridge Name, But Assembly Adjourns
The debate over naming rights at the new Tappan Zee Bridge continues to rage, as officials remain split on the matter. The New York State Senate voted by a count of 40 to 20 in favor of a compromised bill to add the Tappan Zee Designation to the seldom-used official name of Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, but the Democratic-controlled State Assembly ended its annual legislative session without even putting the bill to a vote, leaving its future status uncertain at best. The bill was first introduced by State Sen. John DeFrancisco (R-District 50/Syracuse area). The Senate’s vote came late on Wed…

110K-Signature Petition To Restore TZB As Official Name Delivered To Cuomo
What’s in a name? The battle over naming rights of the new Tappan Zee Bridge came to a head on Thursday, as several members of Save Our Tappan Zee, a group dedicated to preserving the bridge’s namesake, printed out a change.org petition that garnered nearly 110,000 signatures from local residents lambasting the name “Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.” On Thursday, the delegation traveled to the State Capitol building in Albany to drop off a printed out list of the signatures, which called open state legislators and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to restore the previous name of the span connecting Rockland…

Dog Suffers Third Degree Burns From Heating Pad At Ridgefield Park Vet
UPDATE: Investigators are eyeing two dogs burned by a heating pad at the Ridgefield Park Animal Hospital. For Cris Repoles, there's nothing worse than seeing her bulldog Cooper suffer. That's why she took him to the Ridgefield Park Animal Hospital in the first place. But Repoles says the past three months have been nothing but pain for both herself and the dog, who suffered third-degree burns from heating pads during ACL surgery at the vet in December. To make matters worse for Repoles, head doctor Paul Kim initially treated the burns as skin allergies, as they looked similar to the condi…

TZB Tally: Petition To Remove Cuomo Name From Bridge Tops 100K Signatures
It’s a new year, but the sentiment is the same when it comes to Hudson Valley residents’ opinions regarding the naming rights of the new Tappan Zee Bridge. Ever since New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the designation of Mario M. Cuomo Bridge as the official name for the new Tappan Zee span, the vocal outcry against the name has been heard loudly and often, including the change.org petition started by Port Chester resident Monroe Mann, which has garnered more than 105,000 signatures since it was started in November, including more than 3,000 overnight. The petition, which has made nationa…

Mount Vernon Mayor, Clergy, To Say 'No More!' To Trump
Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas and the city’s clergy are calling on the community to say “no more” to President Donald Trump’s “hateful remarks,” with a petition that they plan to deliver to the White House. Thomas and members of the clergy “from all walks of faith will unite to say ‘No More!’” and call on Trump to apologize for recent remarks with a change.org petition that will kick off at 11 a.m. on Tuesday following remarks from the mayor at Mount Vernon City Hall. As of 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, before Thomas’ remarks, more than 50 people had already signed the petition. “I am…

Stratford Teachers’ Union Votes To Accept Furlough Days To Avoid Layoffs
STRATFORD, Conn. — The teachers' union in Stratford voted Monday to accept two unpaid furlough days to avoid more than 40 layoffs by cutting $700,000 from the school budget, according to the Stratford Star. The Stratford Education Association said the teachers "voted to sacrifice for their students and colleagues" but said the Stratford Board of Education must find a long-term solution to its financial situation, the Star said. Superintendent Janet Robinson proposed the furloughs to make up part of the school board's deficit. Related story: At Least 40 Stratford Teachers Will B…
